Tulsi—holy basil—is revered in Hindu tradition as a sacred plant, deeply connected with devotion to Krishna and Vishnu. For generations, Tulsi beads have been worn and used in prayer as a way of returning to the heart, deepening one’s mantra practice and cultivating loving remembrance of the divine.

Made in India, this mala features 108 generous 12mm Tulsi beads on natural white thread. The larger bead size is especially lovely for beginners: easy to hold, easy to move and easy to count as you find your rhythm with japa. Tulsi also has a beautiful natural texture and gentle grip, giving the fingers something tactile to return to as the mantra unfolds.

Japa Meditation

Japa is the repetition of a mantra, traditionally using 108 beads as a way to stay present with each recitation. Begin at the bead beside the Guru bead and move one bead at a time with each repetition of your chosen mantra. When you reach the Guru bead, pause rather than crossing over it. Turn the mala and continue in the opposite direction if you wish to keep chanting.

Treat your Tulsi mala as a sacred companion for your practice. Keep it in a clean, dry place when not in use, ideally in a mala or prayer bag. Avoid wearing it in water or while using perfume, oils or body sprays.
